1. Start with Questions: The Key to Focusing Your Study

The first fundamental step of my method is to start with questions.

But why is it so important?

The reason is simple: in Medicine, as in many other disciplines, professors often have their own views and preferences on certain topics.

To be successful, you must align your studying with what your examiners care about most .

How can you do it?

  • Attend your colleagues' exams, if possible.
  • Interview students fresh out of the exam
  • Take note of the most frequently asked questions

This approach will allow you to optimize your study time by focusing on the topics that are most likely to be examined.

      2. Gather Sources: Create Your Own Library of Knowledge

Before diving into the actual study, it is essential to gather all possible sources on the topic.

      This means:

      • Recommended textbooks
      • Professor's handouts
      • Transcriptions of the lessons
      • Summaries from other students
      • Relevant scientific articles
        study method

The goal is to create a personal library of knowledge from which you can draw for your study.

Having access to different sources will allow you to:

        1. Compare different perspectives on the same topic
        2. Fill any information gaps
        3. Understand concepts better with different explanations

Remember: in Medicine, knowledge is power . The more sources you have at your disposal, the stronger your preparation will be.

          3. Outline: Your Path to Clarity

Now that you have gathered all your sources, it's time to create order out of the chaos .

Schematization is the process by which you transform the mass of information into a coherent and easily accessible system.

To do this effectively, I recommend using an app like SimpleMind , available for iPad, Windows, and Mac.

          simple mind scheme

This tool will allow you to create:

          • Mind maps
          • Waterfall patterns
          • Flowcharts

The advantage of this approach is twofold:

            1. Visual organization : you will have an immediate overview of the topic
            2. Personalization : You will create a unique source, adapted to your specific needs

Remember: the goal is not just to summarize, but to process the information in a personal way .

This active processing promotes deeper understanding and longer-lasting retention.

Important : After you create an outline, take a moment to quickly repeat it without looking at it. Don't worry if you don't remember everything perfectly - the goal is to say what you remember and get the general gist. Don't get hung up on wanting to know it all already - there will be time to learn everything in detail. Trust me, this step is essential to solidify the information you just processed.

              4. Highlight Key Points: Your Study Compass

Once you have created your outline, it is essential to identify and highlight the key points of the speech.

These key words or phrases will act as mnemonic anchors , allowing you to reconstruct the entire argument from just a few elements.

How to choose the key points?

              • Focus on the fundamental concepts
              • Identify cause-effect relationships
              • Highlights essential technical terms

The goal is to create a sort of " treasure map " within your diagram, where the highlighted dots are the signposts that guide you through the sea of information.

                5. Memorize Technical Details: The Power of Mnemonic Techniques

Now comes the part that many students find most difficult: memorizing the technical details.

Those endless lists of symptoms, medications, or procedures that seem impossible to remember.

This is where advanced memory techniques come into play.

One of the most effective, which I have personally used with great success, is the " Memory Palace ".

                How does it work?

                1. Choose a familiar place (your home, the route to college)
                2. Associate each piece of information you want to remember with a vivid image.
                3. Mentally place these images in specific points of your "palace"

For example, if you need to remember the keyword "kidney," you might imagine a huge bean (shaped like a kidney) sticking out of your bedroom window.

                  room with giant bean

The key features to create effective images are:

                  • Exaggeration
                  • Humor
                  • Absurdity
                  • Emotional or sensual connotations

The more bizarre and memorable the image, the more easily it will stick in your memory.

This technique will allow you to transform abstract notions into vivid and accessible memories , greatly facilitating the retrieval of information during the exam.

Note : Just like in the schematization phase, here too it is crucial to repeat out loud or in a low voice, quickly, the scheme you have just memorized. This step will help you to better fix the information in your memory and to quickly check how much you have assimilated.

I have created a dedicated article to explain to you in detail the very powerful technique of the memory palace , to memorize any information in literally 5 seconds.

                    6. Testing: Test Your Knowledge

The last, but not least, step of my method is testing.

This step is crucial for several reasons:

                    1. Check understanding : it allows you to understand if you have really assimilated the concepts or if you have only superficially memorized them
                    2. Identify gaps : Highlight topics that need further study
                    3. Simulate the exam : prepares you psychologically for the real exam situation

                      How to test effectively?

                      • Select a topic from your outlines (e.g. high blood pressure)
                      • Try to present the topic as if you were in the exam
                      • Record yourself and listen back to identify strengths and weaknesses
                      • Ask a colleague to ask you questions about the topic

Remember: the goal is not to parrot back, but to demonstrate a deep understanding of the topic .

It is important to emphasize that testing , or the actual exposure and repetition of the arguments you have inserted into your mind, must be done at the end of the study process. It is not an activity to be carried out continuously during the study, but rather the culminating moment in which you test everything you have learned.

Conclusion: Your Path to Success in Medicine

You now have in your hands a powerful and proven study method that will help you not only pass your exams, but build a solid foundation of medical knowledge for your future career.

To recap, the key points of my method are:

                        1. Starting from the questions
                        2. Gathering sources
                        3. To outline
                        4. Highlight key points
                        5. Memorize technical details with mnemonic techniques
                        6. Test your knowledge at the end of the study process

Remember that every student is unique, and you may need to adapt this method slightly to your personal needs.

Don't be afraid to experiment and find your perfect balance.

With dedication and application of this method, you will be on your way to becoming a successful and knowledgeable doctor .

Happy studying and good luck with your exams!
